🌿 Rewilding and Reconnecting Initiative — First Verge Complete!

What an amazing weekend on 17-18 May! Our very first Rewilding and Reconnecting verge has been created — and it looks fantastic.
We kicked things off with 11 volunteers over three time slots who gathered at the City of Vincent Native Plant Sale. In just five hours, we collected an incredible 300 native plants (including 20 different varieties) and 9 bags of compost — all for just $200. A huge thanks to the City of Vincent for making this possible through their generous sale.
Then on Sunday, 10 enthusiastic volunteers met on Brisbane Street for the planting day. With perfect weather and a clear verge, we got straight to work:
Logs were dug in to create a natural stepping path
Gravel was laid out
Native plants were placed and lovingly tended with fertilizer, wetting agent, and a good watering inÂ
We’ve also added a few photos below and linked a couple of short videos so you can see the transformation in action.
This weekend was a beautiful reminder of what we can achieve together — having fun, building community, and activating our local spaces step by step.Â
Next Step:
Keep your eyes open for our next verge transformation at  Chatsworth Road, happening at 8:30am this Saturday, 24th May. This one will include a bench seat and painted logs — we can’t wait to see it all come together!
About the InitiativeÂ
Phase 1- Kicking off in December 2024 and running through 2025, this exciting project focuses on transforming our neighbourhood’s verges into vibrant green spaces.
Residents were invited to nominate their favourite verges for a little TLC, and many stepped up to help foster a sense of community ownership.
Our enthusiastic R&R committee worked hard designing innovative verge concepts that not only spruce up our surroundings but also feature charming upcycled seating for everyone to enjoy. We carefully removed existing materials, prepared the ground for planting, and now we are including brightly coloured logs and seating where neighbours can relax and connect, and these also signal drivers to slow down on our streets!Â
This initiative wasn’t a solo effort—it was a true community affair. We teamed up with local residents, dedicated volunteers, and experts from various environmental organisations.
We also couldn’t have accomplished this without the help of our local government, City of Vincent. We leveraged their Adopt-A-Verge program. They came an dug out the verges and installed mulch. If you live in the City of Vincent, and this has sparked your interest to rewild your verge, read more about City of Vincent’s- ‘Adopt-A-Verge’ program HERE.
With the support of experienced professionals, including a seasoned arborist, we were able to make a lasting impact.
To spread the word, we handed out “Nominate Your Verge” flyers and boosted our social media presence. Selected nominees committed to maintaining their verges, helping ensure they would thrive long after planting. Our team chose three verge locations for renovation (a total of 5 verges), including one in a high-traffic area to add beauty and help calm passing vehicles.
We are getting ready to celebrate and support residents who had already beautified their verges, offering native seed packs as a token of appreciation.
Thanks to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and enthusiasm — together, we’ve made our community greener, more welcoming, better connected, and make our streets safer. 🌱💚
Phase 1 will be complete by the end of June, but we will be running this initiative next year as well, so heep following us on socials @northbridgecommon, or subscribe to our newsletter (link in homepage).Â
